Portraits Revisited 2: Morocco

Its September 1989 and we are trekking in the Atlas mountains of Morocco.  Several days into the journey we break out of the high mountain ranges and drop into a river valley with a string of small villages on the hillside. As we walk through a village the children as usual come out to watch us, the older girls looking after their younger brothers and sisters. Just after the photograph was taken a furore breaks out and people run down to a drainage channel. A women carrying a large bundle of firewood has fallen off the the stone retaining wall and seriously cut her head. We have a doctor with us who goes to help. We later find out that the village is a couple of days walk away from any medical assistance.

Portrait taken with a Contax 139 on Kodak print film.
